Reading notes

causes of unhappiness:

  • for man absorbed in self absorption, external discipline is the only redeemption bryonic happiness:
  • focus has changed from few men being super important like julius caesar to ordinary men stories. but romeo and juliet also included ordinary people? anyways, the cause of problems is not divine punishment but now focused at individual and human level ?

compeition:

  • competing, outshing ur neighbour levels to overpowered will while the senses and intellect have been starved.
  • coming from poverty leads to fear of going back again to poverty ( arnold bennet’s clayhanger)
  • modern dinousars are people that prefer power to intelligence so that they can intimidate.

boredom:

  • since a lot of primary needs like shelter and food could be obtained without life stressing events like hunting, a lot of free time has led to boredom. This boredom has led to people doing things like developing witch-hunt for sake of entertainment! ( whether or not true, interesting possibility). but some amount of boredom is necessary to focus on something deep and energy consuming. Working on such things lead to very little energy left. If u don’t endure such boredom, you will be search for next distraction for ever.
  • ”A boy wil endure great deal of boredom, if there is a serious constructive purpose. But constructive purposes do not easily form in life of distrations and dissipations” ( its cool the russell calls it dissipations. Energy is utilized but not converted into useful work )

fatigue: russell talks about the emotional fatigue that is caused by too much work or worry. He proposes the same idea of “loading into unconscious”(hammock driven development, karpathy loading into cache, poncare). the idea is - if u think hard consciously about a problem. it loads into subconscious where somehow it works out the solution for you. Like connecting the dots which are hard to see consciously ( benzene ring solution ). the same can be applied to worry. think about the problem bothering u rationaly, don’t give more time than it needs. happiness and efficiency both are outcome of an ordered mind. once u have thought enough about the problem, the details will bore you and u will eventually stop worrying about it. ( but long would u think about the problem? how long is healthy ?)

Companioate marriage - idea by judge lindsey. for a year u stay with person u want to. if it works well contiue to the regular marriage, if not move on. early days, when people used to marry early they had to not much chase for excitements because they had responsibilties and people to take care. But now because of the economy, people marry late. Hence they develop the habbit for finding excitements.

Envy: Russell spends more time explaining how fundamental emotion human envy is and how it leads to destruction of individual and society. The solution seems to be content with what you have and have admiration instead of jealous.

May be its a hard wired emotion which leads to increased determination(like competition) and has lead to improvement. But if u take more than required dosage, it wil destroy you .

sense of sin: there have been things we have been taught since childhood as wrong things - drinking, sexual activities. since these become deeply part of unconscious, as an adult u resist those pleasures which are normal. Ur childhood training considers these things as sin, and prevents u from happy life. the only way to come out of this, is to think rationally if it is the right thing to do or not.

But Russell could reason this because he was in the time when these could be formed as acceptable ideas. what about ideas that are rationally ok? , but before ur time - do u consider open relationship as sin?

Persecution mania:

Here, Russell is mainly addressing Munchasen syndrome kind of behaviour. When something doesn’t work out, sometimes people think others are conspiring to make you fail. Or that you have always been continuosly ill-treated by the others. Basically, always acting as a victim. Russell suggests 4 maxims

  1. Ur own motives are not always genuine. Basically elephant in the brain. Are u doing it to express urself or for applause?
  2. Don’t overestimate ur merits. Dunning kruger effect
  3. Don’t expect too much reaction from people. They have their own bills to pay( alludes to not worry about ingratitude like Daniel Carnige’s stop worrying book)
  4. People are not always plotting against you unless you are someone like Napoleon.

the hardships might be cause of you. it is better to face it , no matter how bitter, instead of coming up with more and more alternative hypothesis.

Fear of public opinion

If u are someone who has different interests from the public like reading books/different activities, living in a society of conventional people who do not like those will cause unhappiness. Eventually, u might learn to suppress your real tastes and become one of them. To fight this

  • meet more congenial(person of similar tastes) people
  • find profession that gives you company of congenial people

I think Bertrand russell wrote this after receiving backlash from a lot of public due to his book marriages and morales.

$ source of happiness

  • have interest in wide variety of things
  • Be kind to the ppl u meet Very simple. Get
